Three Counties Cup Final - 24/08/1991

A DAY DOWN MEMORY LANE IN THE HISTORY OF CLEVEDON CRICKET CLUB by Paul ‘Chalky’ Whyte

23 years ago this weekend Clevedon CC celebrated one of their greatest days in their history when they won the Three Counties Cup at Lydney v Winget.

After playing 10 games in the competition, three coaches of supporters travelled up to Lydney and weren’t going to be disappointed.

Winget were favourites especially with the absence of club professional Andy Caddick.

Winget batted first and were hypnotised by the bowling of Paul Hudd and Reg Hayward and the writing was on the wall. Reg only conceded seven runs from his ten overs and Paul conceded twenty three from his ten. Neil West took 2 for 23 and Piers McBride took 2 for 40 as Winget ended up with 156 – 9 off their 50 overs.

Tea was taken and Clevedon expected! They were not to be disappointed. There are two well adages in cricket. One is catches win matches. The other is that Nigel Jenkins hits the ball murderously hard. Clevedon had achieved both. Clevedon needed 157 and opened with Nigel and Piers McBride Jnr. Piers anchored himself down the other end for the duration and Nigel hit twelve boundaries and six sixes and ended up with 117 not out and Piers 34 not out. The Clevedon crowd went wild even clapping wides as Clevedon won by 10 wickets with eight overs to spare.

Amidst a mass of jubilant, sun drenched supporters Nigel was carried off on the shoulders of his brother Paul, Chris Hewitt and Geoff Taylor.

Piers received the cup from the league chairman Eric Woodmason and the crowd went wild and Nigel deservedly was man of the match which was presented by sports editor of the Clevedon Mercury Alan Burston.

The page was closed and Lydney was etched into Clevedon Cricket Club’s history books -and no doubt the memory will live on for those who witnessed this remarkable day

The History of the Club will be written soon - Watch this space!
